Guidance for cyclists taking part in the bike ride

The route for the cycle ride is shown in the accompanying map.
The route is approximately 4 miles.

  • Each cyclist aged 16 or over is responsible for their own safety, and for the safety of any under 16s that they are accompanying.
  • Follow the Highway Code.
  • If you find yourself in a situation that you think is unsafe, you should take the required action to maintain your safety and that of those around you.
  • In general, follow the ride guides for the routes and stopping places.
  • There will be a police escort for most of the ride. They will stop the traffic at a few selected points to enable us to cross junctions safely. Please follow police directions.
  • We recommend that we all cycle in single file (one behind the other). Make sure that you leave sufficient room between your bike and the one if front.
  • Please do not try to get ahead of the group or keep changing position relative to other cyclists.
  • You are advised to wear a hi-visibility tabard or jacket. Cycle helmets are recommended. All bikes should be in good working order.
  • Under 16s must be accompanied by adults and are to follow these guidelines

We should behave in a way which sets a good example of cycling, as cyclists often receive a bad press.

Please dress colourfully, or wear fancy dress!

Details of the route

When you arrive for the start of the ride, please dismount from your bike at the gates of Christchurch Park and walk to the front of the Mansion. Cycling is not allowed in this part of Christchuch Park.

We will gather outside UCS to let people catch up and catch their breath. The police will stop the traffic for us at the pedestrian crossing just before UCS. Note that at point 6 on the map (outside UCS), there is a stepped kerb down to the road along the quay. Please take care.

There is a covered walkway past the building works along the Wet Dock. Please note that we need to walk through that part of the route.

Do not ride on the pavement on Stoke Bridge. The police will make sure that we cross the junction safely onto the main carriageway.
