A Potted History of the Club

The Suffolk District Association (DA) of the Cyclists' Touring Club (CTC) was formed
in 1928 by 12 members of the CTC meeting in a cafe in Saxmundham main street.
The area of the Suffolk DA covers all the county of Suffolk and runs (rides) are
located on Ipswich.
The Suffolk DA has promoted runs, YHA weekends, standard rides, and social events
and evenings from 1928 until the present except for 4 years during the second world war.
Suffolk DA's own magazine, 'The Winged Wheel', was first produced by local members
in 1947. The magazine is still produced on a quarterly basis and distributed to
around 100 members who pay a modest subscription.
In 1960 the faster members formed their own racing club, The Wolsey Road Club, to
promote races and to participate in races themselves. The Club was originally
exclusive to CTC members but nowadays anyone can join.
The Suffolk CTC & Wolsey Road Club still have strong ties and hold a joint
annual dinner and prize presentation.
Tuesday evening rides originally started in 1961 but for the summer months only.
In 1985 Cyril & Joyce Amner started a mid week section of Thursday rides,
combined with the Autumn tints rides. Mike Richards carried these on, and
Thursday rides became part of the regular Suffolk DA programme.
