ROTATION

 

An essential aspect of soil management and pest and disease Rotation of annual crops helps in the control of pests, diseases and weeds, and in maintenance of soil fertility, organic matter levels and structure

 

Organic growing involves:

 

Growing vegetables on a rotation of 3 to 5 years.

A typical three year rotation means splitting the plot into 3 separate beds

1 Root crops- beetroot, carrot, parsnips and potatoes.

2 Brassicas- cabbage, cauliflower, kale, radish and turnip

3 Other- beans, peas, leeks, onions, peas, tomatoes and celery.The beds are rotated as shown below :-

This can be expanded to a 4 year rotation by separating out potatoes and expanded further to a five year rotation by separating out legumes and legumes (beans , peas etc).
