Organic Gardening
SOIL MANAGEMENT
A healthy fertile soil is the basis of all effective organic growin.
The soil should be managed to look after the millions of tiny creatures
that call it home.
Organic growing involves:
- Recycling of organic material to produce compost and leafmould
that can be used to feed the soil.
- Manures from intensive production methods should never be used.
These may contain unwanted contaminants.
- Fresh manures should be composted before use.
- Keep the soil covered with a protective covering of vegetation,
to prevent drying out of the soil. Also to reduce the washing
out of plant foods
- Loosen subsoil to break up compaction if present.
- Improve drainage as necessary.
- Keep pH at appropriate level.
- Use a rotation system for annual plants.
